Halloween Costume Ideas for Dogs and Their Humans

Halloween is a great time to let your inner child out and have fun dressing up in costumes.

Coming up with costume ideas using your own imagination is exciting in itself, but my favourite part is finding ways to create matching costumes with my family.

Whether you prefer traditional Halloween costumes or something a little more unusual, planning who will dress up as which character is all part of the fun.

Personally, I’m not particularly drawn to scary costumes. Instead, I love choosing a film or story I enjoy and building our costumes around its characters. I like thinking about how well each character fits the number of people in my family and their different personalities.

And what makes it even better? Including our pets in the fun!

Imagine a family of four dressing up as the Ghostbusters, with their dog as the adorable green ghost, Slimer. Or a couple dressed as Victor and Emily from Corpse Bride, with their pup as Zero, the ghost dog. Suddenly, the whole family becomes part of the story!

Struggling to find the perfect costume idea for your family? Sometimes the hardest part isn’t choosing a theme, but finding a story with just the right number of characters!

Here are some ideas to get your imagination going, whether you’re a couple, a family with children, or a group of friends looking to include your four-legged family member.

10 Dog and Humans Costume Ideas

  1. E.T. — Dress up as Elliott and E.T.
  2. Superheroes — Choose your favourite superheroes, with your dog dressed as Superdog.
  3. Super Mario — Dress up as Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach or Bowser, with your dog as Yoshi, Toad or even a Super Star.
  4. Bluey — Dress up as your favourite characters from the Heeler family, with your dog as Bingo or Muffin.
  5. Little Red Riding Hood — Dress as Little Red Riding Hood, the grandmother and the woodcutter, with your dog as the Big Bad Wolf.
  6. Harry Potter — Choose your favourite Hogwarts characters, with your dog as Fluffy, the three-headed dog.
  7. The Pumpkin Family — Keep things simple with matching pumpkin costumes for everyone, and a comfortable pumpkin bandana for your dog.
  8. How to Train Your Dragon — Dress as Hiccup and the other Vikings, with your dog as Toothless or another dragon.
  9. Lilo & Stitch — Choose characters such as Lilo, Nani, David or Cobra Bubbles, with your pup as Stitch, the little blue alien mistaken for a dog by humans.
  10. Mickey Mouse and Friends — Dress as Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy or Goofy, with your dog as Pluto.

Costumes Where Your Dog Doesn’t Need to Dress Up

If your dog isn’t comfortable wearing a costume, you can still include them in your Halloween theme! Some films feature dogs whose breeds can inspire your costume choice, meaning your pup can join in simply by being themselves.

  • 101 Dalmatians — Choose characters such as Roger, Anita, Cruella de Vil, Jasper or Horace, with your Dalmatian playing one of the spotted pups.
  • Bluey — Dress up as your favourite characters from the show, choosing one that matches your dog’s breed where possible.
  • Lady and the Tramp — Recreate the classic film with family members dressed as the human characters, while your dog takes the role of one of the canine stars.
  • Up – Dress as Carl and Russell with your Golden Retriever as Doug

Comfort before Fun!

While having your dog participate in your Halloween celebration can be fun, they have no idea what Halloween is and would not feel left out if they couldn’t wear a cosume or could not understand the reference.

For this reason make sure their comfort is your priority.

Pick small accessories that fit the theme over intricate costumes. A simple themed bandana, collar or small accessory can still make the character recognizable without having your dog wear a bulky costume.

When It’s Best to Stay Home

Some dogs really don’t like to be in crowds and would rather be home or simply not participate in Trick or Treat and halloween parties.

In that case having a Dog Walker or Sitter stay with them might be a better solution.
