šDog Safety Tips For Every Season: March Edition
š½ļøThe Right Food
One of the most important things for a healthy dog or cat is the food they eat. Just like us humans, pets have very specific nutritional needs, and feeding them the wrong things can lead to serious health problems. Dogs and cats need food that contains vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and water, but in very different proportions ā and whatās fine for a dog may be completely unsuitable for a cat.

š„£Homemade vs. Industrial Food
When it comes to feeding your pet, you essentially have two main choices: homemade food or industrial (store-bought) food.
- Homemade food allows you to choose exactly what goes into your petās meals. You can tailor ingredients to their needs, but itās time-consuming and often more expensive. If you go down this route, always speak with a vet to get guidance on ingredients, portion sizes, and nutritional balance.
- Industrial food is convenient, saves time, and is usually less expensive. However, not all industrial pet food is created equal. Many cheaper options are high in carbohydrates, which pets donāt need in such large quantities. Over time, too many carbs can lead to health issues. Always check labels and look for foods with lower carbohydrate content and quality ingredients.
š²Dry Food vs. Wet Food
Another decision is whether to feed dry food, wet food, or a combination. Both have pros and cons:
Dry Food:
Pros:
- Cheaper than wet food
- Easy to store, doesnāt need refrigeration
- Lasts for more meals
- Crunchy texture helps reduce tartar
Cons:
- Often higher in carbohydrates
- Less appealing to picky eaters
- Pets will need more water
- Not suitable for pets with dental issues or low appetite
Wet Food:
Pros:
- More attractive and palatable
- Helps pets drink less water (because of the moisture content)
- Better for pets with dental issues or poor appetite
Cons:
- More expensive
- Must be refrigerated after opening
- Can encourage tartar formation due to softer texture
- Usually sold in smaller portions

šTreats and Snacks
Treats are a great tool for training and rewarding good behaviour, but moderation is key. Too many snacks can lead to weight gain or digestive issues, so itās important to factor them into your petās overall diet.
ššKeeping Mealtime Stress-Free
If you ever find it tricky to feed your pet at home, I can take care of mealtimes during my dog-walking sessions. I can feed your dog if youāre not home or if you prefer to wait until after their walk. During walks, I also use treats in moderation to reward good behaviour, helping your pet stay happy, healthy, and well-mannered.
