It’s never easy to decide that a doggie friend would be a new addition to your life and your family.
If you fail to choose the one, there are usually bad consequences, especially for the dog.
You can buy a puppy from a breeder or a private owner or you can adopt a dog from a shelter or a rescue centre. Anyway you need to be sure enough of the good psycho physical condition of all the dogs that you’re going to meet.
If you are looking for a puppy, be sure that you can see the mother with the litter, because if something is wrong you can easily see it when mother and puppies are togheter (i,e, if the puppies don’t receive the right amount of attention from the mother they can have a big range of behavioural problems in the future); see if the place is clean and the environment rich in stimuli.
The breed (or the cross eventually) is important as well. In fact if you are busy most of the day and you don’t have much spare time for walkies don’t choose a dog with a big amount of energy such as the Siberian Husky because , even if they are beautiful, they can be also destructive if not well exercised or bored. Choose a Boxer instead, a dog that is usually happy to get a nap after a daily walk.
Once you have decided what kind of dog you are looking for, you can set up an important first meeting. Althought is quite impossible be sure that you are picking the right dog at first sight, there is a method that can help you during the process.
Sue Senberg has developed a simple sequence of steps that can show if a dog is social or not. That is indeed one of the most important qualities in a dog. A social dog will in fact be trained more easlily and that goes for any kind of training; from the simpler house training to the harder guide dog training.
STEP 1-Keep the dog on leash without interaction. A social dog would try to get any kind of attention from you barking, touching or even just looking at you;
STEP 2-Sit down and repeat the same behaviour in the STEP 1;
STEP 3-Now pet the dog just once. A social dog should try to have more;
STEP 4-Give the dog full attention, pet him, praise him. That will show the dog reaction to a full interaction (if you have small children an overexcited dog won’t do much good).
Now you have some advice! So go and get your friend for life!
